Heathrow Airport Information

Heathrow airport is the UK's largest airport and the one of the worlds busiest international airports. 68 million passengers and 1.3 million tons of cargo pass through Heathrows terminals every year and makes it a major hub for European, transatlantic and worldwide travel and transportation. Originally it was a small airfield used by the army during the Second World War mainly for test flights. Commerical arrivals and depatures were mainly from another nearby airport, Hanworth Park.

However the need for a large ariport to service London and the surrounding areas made Heathrow an ideal location and it was developed by the Ministry of Civil Aviation and by 1947 3 runways were put in place with a new permanent terminal building being built in the early 1950s. This was followed by the building of terminal 2 in 1955 due to large demand. Since this time, the growth of Heathrow airport has steadily increased and has 4 fully operating terminals with terminal 5 to be fully functional by 2011. It has major transportation links to and from London and all major motorways.
